The turtles of the Gili Islands are famous. Spotting one of the many turtles that inhabit the waters around the islands is a unique opportunity. The Turtle Point is located in the northeastern corner of Gili Air. To see them, you can snorkel from the shore. The turtles were close to the beach on Gili T, almost within reach. You can snorkel and see turtles at the same time by visiting Turtle Point, which is located between Gili Air and Gili Meno.

Snorkeling Tour Around the Gili Islands and the Gili Meno Statues
Discover the underwater world beneath the surface of the Gili Islands. When you put on your mask and dive into the water, a whole new universe unfolds before your eyes. Additionally, there are submerged statues located close to the coast of Gili Meno, making it a unique dive spot.

Spend Time on Gili Trawangan and Meno
The local ferry makes it easy and affordable to travel between the different Gili Islands. After a day of snorkeling, you can arrange private transport to one of the nearby islands and then take the public ferry to return to Gili Air.

Stand-up Paddleboarding
On the eastern side of the island, there are several places where you can rent a stand-up paddleboard (SUP). Paddleboarding on Gili Air is definitely worth trying; it can be a fun experience!

Other fun places in Bali for kids

Bali with kids

In addition to popular places in Bali for kids, such as Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud, and Uluwatu, there are several more beautiful regions worth visiting with children. Below is a brief description of these destinations as they appear in the original blog.

Sidemen
Sidemen, located in a picturesque part of Bali, offers rice terraces covered with lush vegetation, waterfalls, beautiful temples, and traditional Balinese culture. Sidemen is similar to how Ubud used to be and is ideal for honeymooners and younger travelers looking to relax and enjoy. While this area may be less interesting for children, it remains a valuable place to visit.

Amed
The charming beach village of Amed is located in a relatively undeveloped part of Bali, offering both black and white sandy beaches, colorful reefs, and a calm, blue sea. This makes Amed one of the most relaxing and picturesque destinations in Bali.

Nusa Dua
Nusa Dua is a region in Bali with several chain hotels within a gated area. The beach is perfect for families with young children. If you’re looking to indulge and relax, this is the perfect spot. However, for an authentic experience of Balinese culture, this may not be the ideal location.

Jimbaran
Jimbaran, once a sleepy fishing village, has transformed into a popular destination thanks to its abundance of seafood restaurants, beautiful beaches, and unique shopping opportunities. It also offers several luxury hotels, such as the Four Seasons Jimbaran.

Lovina
Lovina Beach, located on the north coast of Bali, is a popular tourist destination. It is known for its black sand beaches, coral reefs, and the presence of dolphins.

Culture of Bali

Bali with kids

The Balinese follow a form of Hinduism known as Agama Hindu Dharma. Balinese culture, traditions, and religion influence nearly every aspect of daily life on the island, making Bali extra special for visitors. A key belief in Balinese Hinduism is that elements of nature are influenced by spirits.

On the island, there are more than 20,000 temples (pura), each with its own function and rituals within the Balinese 250-day calendar. From Pura Tirta – water temples for purification – to Pura Segara, sea temples on the ocean for honoring sea gods. Village and family temples also play an important role as meeting places. The philosophy of Tri Hita Karana – “Three Causes of Goodness” – forms the core of Balinese belief, focusing on the balance between God, humans, and nature. This is reflected in their lifestyle and architecture.

Practical information

Bali with kids

If you’re planning to travel to Bali with kids, there are a few things it’s helpful to know.

The best time to travel to Bali.

The ideal time to travel to Bali is from March to October. The rainy season is from November to February. During the rainy season, it is less crowded, accommodations are cheaper, and the sun still shines regularly.

Book your flight

Book a flight to Denpasar, Bali. KLM, Singapore Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, and Emirates offer flights to Bali.

Travel Requirements

A passport is required to enter Bali and must remain valid for six months after your departure. Check the travel regulations from your country to Indonesia, as they vary by country. Additionally, travel insurance is recommended for things like 24-hour emergency assistance, medical coverage, and cancellation insurance.

Vaccination

Check with a doctor or healthcare specialist to see if additional vaccinations are required for your trip to Bali. Hepatitis A and B, MMR (measles), rabies, typhoid, and yellow fever are common vaccinations. Getting these vaccines is recommended but not mandatory. Most insurance plans cover the cost of these vaccines.

Book your accommodation

First, create an itinerary and then book all the stays that suit your taste, budget, and family. I always book accommodations well in advance to avoid disappointment, as popular places tend to get booked quickly.

Arrival and departure at Denpasar airport

Book an airport transfer for pickup and drop-off via the first and last accommodation. I recommend avoiding taxis at the airport due to high prices. Luxury travelers can arrange for a VIP arrival and departure at the airport. The price per person is reasonable; you can skip the lines, and assistance with visas and luggage will all be taken care of. Truly a super service!

Make reservations for restaurants and beach clubs

Book your restaurant and beach club reservations in advance if you’re traveling during peak season. Also, leave room for spontaneous decisions.

Bali with kids

Packing list for children:

If you’re going to Bali with children, it’s a good idea to make a thorough packing list.

Summer clothing

Dresses, skirts, shorts, T-shirts, underwear, swimwear, hats, caps, sunglasses, flip-flops.

Essentials with kids

When traveling with children, it’s helpful to bring extra essentials such as bottles, pacifiers, baby formula, baby food, diapers, wipes, face cloths, and swim floats. These items are available in supermarkets in Bali, but having a stock for the first few days can be convenient. Most accommodations typically offer amenities like a bottle sterilizer, changing mats, and baby cribs.

Sunscreen

The sun shines brightly in Bali, so it’s recommended to use sunscreen with SPF 30 or 50 regularly. Don’t forget aftersun as well. Sunscreen can be expensive and often out of stock, so I always bring a large supply!

Medications

I always carry a full pharmacy with me just in case. Many Western medications are available in Bali, but having your own supply is always handy. Important medications include: paracetamol, aspirin, oral rehydration salts (O.R.S.), charcoal tablets, nasal spray, and insect repellent.

Games that are suitable to bring along:

Bali offers many activities, so little toys and games are needed. Family-friendly restaurants with play areas and beaches always provide entertainment. Fun family games are handy for during lunch or dinner. Popular options include Uno, Beaver Gang, Regenwormen, travel editions of games like chess and Goose Game. Additionally, toys like cars, airplanes, Barbies, and beach buckets can easily be found in souvenir shops.

Tips & Tricks During Your Stay

Bali with kids

During a stay in Bali with kids, there are various useful apps and tips that can make your trip easier.

Money

The currency in Bali is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). You can withdraw cash from an ATM as soon as you arrive at Denpasar airport, directly in the arrival hall. It is recommended to withdraw cash from an ATM instead of exchanging money at a currency exchange, as exchange rates at exchange offices are often higher. ATMs are found on every street corner in Bali. It is common to negotiate the price at markets, for example, by offering 50% less than the requested price and reaching a compromise. Tipping is common in Bali and is appreciated!

GoJek-app

Download the Gojek app. This app offers services such as taxi or motorcycle rides, courier services, and shopping and delivery services, all easily arranged via your phone.

Scooter

Scooters are a commonly used mode of transportation for both locals and tourists in Bali. You can rent them through your accommodation or at one of the many rental shops found on every street corner. The cost is around 7-10 dollars per day. Gasoline is easily available at street corners and tourist kiosks.

Taxi

You can also book a taxi for transportation, although the journey might take longer due to the heavy traffic in Bali. GoJek and Blue Bird Taxi are considered the most reliable. It’s possible to make a deal for the whole day, where the driver waits at each stop. The common rate for the whole day is usually 50 US dollars.

Boat to Nusa and Gili Islands

At the ports of Benoa or Padangbai, you can buy a ferry ticket to travel to one of the islands. Companies such as Rocky Fast Cruise, Ekajaya Fast Ferry, and Blue Water Express are considered safe and reliable.

Medical care in Bali

The quality of medical care in Bali is excellent. The most common health issues are dehydration and Bali Belly. In case of a medical emergency, you can ask the manager of your accommodation for an internal doctor or directions to the nearest medical facility. If the condition is more serious, you can visit one of the three BIMC hospitals in Bali, located in Kuta, Nusa Dua, and Ubud. These hospitals are generally regarded as the most reputable hospitals in Bali for international visitors.

Preventing Bali Belly

Stomach discomfort and diarrhea are symptoms of Bali Belly, caused by bacteria commonly found in contaminated food and drink. Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water for rinsing your mouth after brushing your teeth. Also, avoid eating food from small street vendors and drinking ice cubes. Lastly, wash your hands frequently.

Grocery Shopping

Bintang Supermarket and Pepito Market are two very popular grocery stores in Bali. If you don’t feel like negotiating at the local markets, Bintang Supermarket offers all the standard Bali souvenirs. Additionally, you’ll find a wide range of products like shampoo, sunscreen, and diapers. Pepito Market is also a supermarket where you can find everything you need.

What is a warung?

A warung is a great dining experience if you’re traveling to Bali with kids and want to eat locally. A warung is a small family-run business, usually a shop, café, or eatery. The food served in a warung is often homemade and typically consists of recipes and dishes passed down through generations within the family.

Finally

Bali with kids

Bali remains a wonderful destination to explore with children. Whether you choose the lively Canggu, the cultural heart of Ubud, or the tranquility of Sidemen or the Gili Islands – there’s something for everyone. It’s the variety that makes a road trip around this island so enjoyable: beach days, temple visits, jungles, and markets seamlessly alternate.

Hopefully, this blog helps you plan your own adventure in Bali with kids. And remember: even if it’s your first time, it’s almost impossible not to want to return.
