Desembocadura Río Guadalhorce nature reserve
Close to the city on the west side is the 125-hectare Desembocadura Río Guadalhorce nature reserve, one of the few remaining green areas on the Costa del Sol. This protected area is a true oasis for nature lovers and offers a beautiful contrast to the urban environment. The nature reserve is one of the most important ornithological centers in southern Europe. Throughout the year, visitors can observe more than 240 bird species, including cormorants, griffon vultures, little egrets, crested divers, majestic bald eagles and ospreys, imperial herons, beautiful pink flamingos and, with a little luck, the shy black stork. Within this nature reserve is Guadalhorce beach, a tranquil spot perfect for a relaxing day out. The area offers numerous short and flat hiking trails, ideal for a family stroll. Several vantage points can be found along these trails, where you can enjoy the views and the rich birdlife. For the best visit to the nature reserve, it is advisable to bring exploration equipment: comfortable shoes, a camera, binoculars and mosquito spray. Silence is key here; the quieter you are, the more birds you can see. Desembocadura Río Guadalhorce Nature Reserve offers a unique experience of nature and tranquility, close to the city, and is a must-visit for anyone who wants to discover the natural beauty of the Costa del Sol.
