The area, part of the national landscape De Noardelijke Fryske Walden, is managed by Staatsbosbeheer and is known for its ecological value within the Northern Netherlands. The story goes that the name De Leijen dates back to the 18th century, when locals feared that the reclamation of the peat bog would lead to strife, pronounced in Frisian as \"dit wurdt Leien.\" Today, you can enjoy delicious food at Paviljoen de Leyen and enjoy a changing menu of classic dishes in a new twist. For families, this is a perfect destination. Children can play, swim, climb and scramble while parents relax. The basement of the pavilion houses a play area where children can run around safely. Outside, the beach with sunbathing area offers plenty of fun with a water pump and zip line. There is always a coloring sheet available for the young artists among us.
