Because believe me: this is so much more than just luxury resorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After our adventure in Sri Lanka, we boarded the plane to the Maldives. In just one and a half hours we arrived in this tropical paradise. Unfortunately, we couldn\u2019t see much from the air \u2013 the route from Sri Lanka to Mal\u00e9 doesn\u2019t really pass over the islands \u2013 but the anticipation of finally setting foot in the Maldives more than made up for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Since we landed around 6:30 p.m., it wasn\u2019t possible to travel on to one of the islands the same evening. Almost all boats only depart during the day. That\u2019s why we chose to stay the first night in Hulhumale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We stayed at Reef Guest House<\/a>, a neat guesthouse with a separate bedroom and a small living room with kitchen. Perfect for settling in after the flight. The people there were incredibly friendly and helpful, which immediately made us feel welcome. Right next to the hotel was a little restaurant where we grabbed a quick bite before heading to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The next morning, our real Maldives adventure began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After our first night in Hulhumale, it was time to head to our first real resort in the Maldives: Kurumba<\/a>. At Mal\u00e9 airport, we were warmly welcomed by staff from the resort and guided to the speedboat. Within just ten minutes we stepped into a completely different world: a tropical island with white beaches, swaying palm trees, and that unbelievably clear, blue water. For us \u2013 and especially for the kids \u2013 it felt like the holiday was truly beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n On arrival, we were greeted with big smiles and a refreshing coconut ice cream. Then we hopped into a buggy for a short tour around the island. It gave us an immediate sense of all that Kurumba<\/a> has to offer: seven restaurants, several bars, a large swimming pool, a kids\u2019 club, a dive center, and plenty of sports and relaxation options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our villa was located on the quiet side of the island and turned out to be a fantastic place to stay. With a private pool in the garden, an outdoor shower, and a semi-open bathroom, it felt like pure luxury. The kids jumped into the water within a minute \u2013 and to be honest, we couldn\u2019t resist either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n For lunch, we headed to the buffet restaurant. The food was extensive and well-prepared, with plenty of choice for everyone. The fresh, colorful juices were an instant favorite. Afterward, it was time to dive into the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n And what a sea it was! The water is so clear that you can literally see the fish swimming all around you. From the beach, you can start snorkeling right away, making it very accessible, even with kids. Within minutes we spotted dozens of tropical fish in every color and shape. For our children, this was their very first real encounter with the underwater world of the Maldives \u2013 a moment none of us will forget anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The next morning, we visited the Majaa Kids\u2019 Club. Here, children aged 4 to 12 can take part in all kinds of activities: arts and crafts, sports, cooking workshops, and even a mini-disco. Our kids loved playing a game of table tennis and having some time to do their own thing. For parents, it\u2019s a reassuring place to know the children are entertained while you can relax a bit yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n After that, we had a glass-bottom boat tour planned. Unfortunately, a ten-minute rain shower spoiled the plan, and the excursion was canceled. Luckily, there\u2019s always plenty to do at Kurumba<\/a>, so we grabbed our snorkels and headed into the water ourselves. That\u2019s when a special moment happened: I spotted a blacktip reef shark in the distance! Exciting, but mostly just incredible. Later we learned these sharks are regular visitors around the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At Kurumba we also spent some time at the main pool<\/strong>. The kids loved swimming and playing there, while we relaxed on the comfortable waterbeds along the side. The pool is spacious and a great alternative when you want to switch things up from snorkeling in the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n A true highlight was the dolphin tour at sunset. After a short boat ride, we came across a group of playful bottlenose dolphins swimming around the boats. They leapt out of the water, almost as if they were putting on a show just for us. The kids couldn\u2019t believe their eyes, and we were just as thrilled. As if that wasn\u2019t enough, the sky slowly turned shades of orange and pink \u2013 dolphins and a sunset in one. An experience never to forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Dining at Kurumba is an experience in itself. The absolute highlight for us was the Japanese teppanyaki restaurant. Here, the chefs cooked right in front of us with a hefty dose of entertainment: fire shows, knives flying through the air, and even egg magic tricks. The kids were mesmerized, while the most delicious dishes were prepared: from lobster and prawns to meat and vegetables. It was late, but all tiredness was forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n On our last morning, we heard that reef sharks and large schools of unicornfish are often spotted near the Japanese restaurant. With snorkels on, we went to see for ourselves. And indeed, everywhere around us swam the unique unicornfish. We even spotted two sharks \u2013 a spectacular farewell to Kurumba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n For families wanting to experience the Maldives with kids, Kurumba<\/a> is a fantastic choice. The short transfer from Mal\u00e9 is ideal, the villas with private pools are a dream for both young and old, and the variety of activities is endless. From snorkeling and dolphin tours to the kids\u2019 club and the large pool: nobody will get bored here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We look back on a few wonderful days full of luxury, adventure, and relaxation. Kurumba combines the convenience of being close to Mal\u00e9 with the atmosphere of a tropical paradise \u2013 making it the perfect introduction to the Maldives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But our adventure didn\u2019t end here. After this unforgettable experience, we boarded another boat, this time heading to a local island. Because the Maldives with kids isn\u2019t just about luxury resorts \u2013 it\u2019s also about discovering local life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Maldives are often associated with luxury resorts and idyllic overwater villas, but did you know there\u2019s a completely different side to discover? On the local islands of the Maldives, you get to experience what real island life looks like. Families live here, kids play outside until late, and you eat in small restaurants among the locals. We visited Dharavandhoo Maldives, a small but lively island in the Baa Atoll. It turned out to be the perfect place to experience the Maldives authentically together with our children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From Mal\u00e9, we took the local ferry to Dharavandhoo. The boat was mostly filled with locals, but luckily, we managed to find three seats together. That was no luxury, as the two-hour trip was quite intense. Especially during the first hour, we literally bounced over the waves. Personally, it was a bit nerve-racking for me (I\u2019m not great at sea \ud83d\ude05), but the kids handled it surprisingly well. Thankfully, the seasickness pills did their job. In the end, we arrived safely \u2013 relieved, but mostly curious about what lay ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n We were picked up by our hotel, Kiha Beach<\/a>, located right on bikini beach. Convenient with kids, since you can\u2019t wear swimwear on all beaches. From our balcony, we had a stunning sea view, and on our bed, a welcome arrangement of flowers and leaves awaited us \u2013 a warm start. After a bite to eat, we immediately enjoyed our first sunset. A magical moment that instantly made us feel: yes, we are in the Maldives!<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The next morning, we got an early call: manta rays had been spotted. Within 15 minutes we were on the boat. At first, it seemed disappointing \u2013 the kids saw a few, but I saw none \u2013 yet at the second snorkeling spot we struck gold. We saw about fifteen mantas swimming right beneath us! An incredible sight and an experience the kids talked about for days afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Even without excursions, Dharavandhoo is a wonderful place. You can walk straight into the water from your hotel and immediately see colorful fish. Sometimes even a shark, which caused quite some excitement for the kids. For lunch, we went to Honey Bunny, a restaurant overlooking the runway of the airport. The planes landing and taking off now and then were an unexpected extra attraction, especially for the children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Another highlight was an excursion we booked with Biosphere Inn<\/a>. First, we snorkeled at Turtle Reef, where we saw several turtles. Swimming alongside these calm, majestic creatures was unforgettable. After that, we went to a sandbank in the middle of the ocean. Nothing but sand, surrounded by turquoise waters \u2013 as if you\u2019ve landed on your own private island. For the kids, it was the perfect playground to run, play, and snorkel in the shallow water. For us, it was one of the most special moments of the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Since we were often \u201con standby\u201d for whale shark sightings, we also had time to simply enjoy the beach. One afternoon, we built a life-sized turtle out of sand together. It became a fun project everyone joined in on. For the kids, it was pure joy, and for us, a beautiful reminder of how simple happiness can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course, we hoped for the ultimate experience: swimming with a whale shark. We stood ready several times as reports came in, but every time we were just a little too late. A few times, though, we did get very close to manta rays \u2013 one even swam directly under my husband and son. Others told us about a night swim with whale sharks, but unfortunately, we only found out about it on our last evening. That was a real pity, especially since they had been spotted every evening while we were there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n What made Dharavandhoo so special for us was that you really get to experience island life. While you enjoy snorkeling or an excursion, the kids can play on the beach or in the park in the middle of the island, beautifully lit up in the evening. There are plenty of restaurants with kid-friendly options, and since the island is small, you can walk everywhere. It felt safe, easy to navigate, and at the same time very adventurous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We may not have seen a whale shark, but we did see manta rays, turtles, and countless colorful fish. We snorkeled right off the beach, built a sand turtle, and discovered the charm of a local island. Dharavandhoo Maldives is a fantastic place to experience the Maldives with kids: adventurous, educational, yet still relaxing. For us, it was an experience we won\u2019t soon forget \u2013 and one we can wholeheartedly recommend to any family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After a few special days on the local island of Dharavandhoo, it was time to head back towards Mal\u00e9. The return journey was a bit bumpy: the boat left later than planned, had some technical issues, and made several stops along the way. We finally arrived in Mal\u00e9 around 12:45 p.m. Luckily, the sea was much calmer this time, so the trip itself went smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We were glad we had chosen to end our Maldives trip with kids at a resort close to the airport, so there\u2019d be no stress about catching our flight. And what an ending it was: we spent our last night at Hard Rock Hotel Maldives<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n After a short boat ride of less than 15 minutes, we were already on the island. The moment you arrive, you feel the lively atmosphere: music everywhere, vibrant colors, and playful details that reflect the iconic Hard Rock style. Even the pillows in the rooms are decorated with little guitars. For the kids, this resort immediately felt different from the other places we\u2019d been \u2013 cheerful, energetic, and yet still tropical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n We stayed in an overwater villa \u2013 the exact image that comes to mind when you think of the Maldives. From our private pool and terrace, we looked out over the ocean. For the kids, it was pure joy to snorkel straight from the villa. The water around the villa was crystal clear, filled with colorful fish swimming by curiously. Since it was shallow, we had to be careful around the coral, but it felt incredibly special to dive right into the sea from our own deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Our first afternoon, we had lunch at Elephant & Butterfly, the restaurant next to the pool. While we ordered our food, the kids discovered the big waterslide and didn\u2019t want to leave. For families, it\u2019s extra nice that there\u2019s a kids\u2019 menu \u2013 and even at lunch, it was included. The food was well-prepared, and we were able to enjoy a relaxing afternoon while the children played in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After lunch we headed back to our overwater villa<\/strong> to relax for a while. The kids jumped straight into our private pool, and with our snorkels we explored the water around the villa. It felt special to spot colorful fish right from our own terrace. Later that afternoon we enjoyed a breathtaking sunset, with the sky turning shades of orange and pink \u2013 the perfect way to end the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n In the evening, we chose Ms Olive Oyl, a Mediterranean restaurant located on one of the other islands within the resort complex. A buggy took us there, and soon we were sitting with our feet in the sand, enjoying an extensive dinner. There were plenty of options for the kids, and together we enjoyed a three-course meal with ocean views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n After dinner, we first went to Hard Rock Cafe for some live music and then walked back across the bridge to Hard Rock. Thanks to the underwater lighting, we spotted several reef sharks swimming by, along with both large and small fish and even a stingray. For the kids, it was almost as thrilling as snorkeling. On the other side of the bridge, we heard music: a DJ was playing right in the middle of the pool while guests were partying. It gave the evening a lively, festive ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The next morning, another highlight awaited us: a floating breakfast in our own pool. The tray was filled to the brim with everything imaginable: pancakes, bread rolls, fruit, yogurt, juices, and even a bottle of bubbly. While we enjoyed our breakfast, a staff member suddenly pointed toward the sea. In the distance, a school of dolphins leapt out of the water. Having breakfast in your pool with dolphins on the horizon \u2013 that\u2019s a memory we\u2019ll never forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Our stay lasted only one night, but it quickly became clear that Hard Rock Hotel Maldives<\/a> is a resort where families can easily spend several days. There\u2019s a large pool with a waterslide, a kids\u2019 club, and plenty of restaurant options where kids often eat for free. On top of that, there are plenty of water-based activities, and in the evenings, you can enjoy live music or a DJ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hard Rock Hotel Maldives combines the tropical beauty of the Maldives with a vibrant, musical atmosphere. For families who want to experience the Maldives with kids in a place where there\u2019s always something happening, this resort is a colorful and surprising choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We spent a total of 8 days in the Maldives, in August \u2013 officially the rainy season. Many people wonder if that\u2019s a good time to visit. Our experience: during those 8 days, we had only four showers, three of which were very short and barely noticeable. Only once did rain actually affect our plans, when the glass-bottom boat trip was canceled. Other than that, we enjoyed mostly sunshine and beautiful weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s always this lucky. We heard from other travelers that they had much more rain during the same period \u2013 sometimes even half the time. Generally, though, the showers are short and tropical, and the sun usually comes back quickly. However, rain can sometimes make the water murkier, which means snorkeling may be a bit less spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For us, it wasn\u2019t a problem at all, and we experienced the Maldives just as you hope: crystal-clear water, white beaches, and unforgettable encounters with marine life. From luxury resorts with overwater villas to exploring a local island, the Maldives truly surprised us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Traveling to the Maldives with kids turned out not only to be doable but an absolutely fantastic experience.
